Japan unveils newest attack submarine powered by lithium-ion battery
The Japanese Navy demonstrated a new class submarine that will use lithium-ion batteries as a power source.
Diesel-electric submarine Taigei presented at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Kobe or «Big whale» has a length of 84 m, a width of 9.1 m, a mass of 3000 tons and can accommodate 70 crew members.
So far, the Japanese fleet continues to test the submarine and install additional equipment. Commissioning is scheduled for March 2022.
Lithium-ion batteries have been chosen as the primary energy source due to their ease of maintenance, high capacity and long service life, even underwater conditions.
The project cost Japan $ 720 million.
