A group of physicists discovered the existence of an exotic form of electrons that spiral around their own antiparticle.

Scientists have discovered that chiral excitons are formed on the surface of a bismuth selenide crystal under intense exposure to light, consisting of «knocked out» radiation of an electron and a positively charged hole formed. After particle appearances begin fast revolve around each other and collide after a trillionth of a second. Mutual annihilation causes emission of light of a lower frequency, called photoluminescence.

Excitons are considered to be chiral, since it does not transform into itself upon mirror reflection. For example, how the right hand in reflection is seen as the left.

The dynamics of the discovered exotic particles is not yet completely clear, so in the future physicists plan to study the possibility of their appearance on other materials and use equipment for monitoring ultra-fast processes.
